Abandoned Farmlands Are Key to Sustainable Bioenergy
Biofuels can be a sustainable part of the world’s energy future, especially if bioenergy agriculture is developed on currently abandoned or degraded agricultural lands, report scientists from the Carnegie Institution and Stanford University. Using these lands for energy crops, instead of converting existing croplands or clearing new land, avoids competition with food production and preserves carbon-storing forests needed to mitigate climate change. Sustainable bioenergy is likely to satisfy no more than 10% of the demand in the energy-intensive economies of North America, Europe and Asia. But for some developing countries, notably in Sub-Saharan Africa, the potential exists to supply many times their current energy needs without compromising food supply or destroying forests.

REC To Expand Production by 100 MW
Renewable Energy Corporation (REC) has decided to invest up to NOK 400 million [US $77 million] to upgrade and extend the existing production capacity at its Heroya wafer production facility. The production capacity at the existing plant will be expanded by approximately 100 megawatts (MW). Construction is scheduled to start towards the end of the third quarter 2008. The additional production capacity will come on-line towards the end of 2009.

Study Finds Solar Could Provide 10% of U.S. Generation by 2025
A new study from Clean Edge says that solar energy could reach cost parity with retail-electricity rates in most regions of the U.S. in less than a decade. The “Utility Solar Assessment (USA)” study, produced by Clean Edge and Co-op America, provides a roadmap for utilities, solar companies and regulators to reach 10% solar in the U.S. by 2025.

PRISM SOLAR TECHNOLOGIES RECEIVES FRIST 60 MEGAWATT PRODUCTION LINE
Munich, Germany – Against the high-energy background of 40,000 attendees at Intersolar 2008 this week, Prism Solar Technologies, Inc. announced that it has received the first equipment for its 60 megawatt holographic film production line this week in Tucson Arizona. The equipment will undergo testing and tuning before it goes into production in New York later this year. “This is the day we’ve been waiting for” said Prism Solar’s CEO Rick Lewandowski. “Our optics will be a fulcrum for the industry”, Lewandowski went on to say.

Israel site for California solar power test (Environmental News Network)
Energy company BrightSource Energy Inc said it will open a solar “power tower” in Israel this week to test new technology it will use when building power plants next year in California. California utility PG&E Corp signed contracts with BrightSource in April to buy up to 900 megawatts of solar thermal power in the next few years, enough to power about 630,000 homes.

Boralex Signs 14.5-MW Hydro Deal
Boralex Inc. announced that it has signed an agreement to acquire a hydroelectric power station with an installed capacity of 14.5 megawatts (MW) located in Ocean Falls, British Columbia, Canada. The power station currently generates approximately 13,000 megawatt-hours (MWh) of electricity per year.
