Solar Powered Floating Lilies?
Inside: Green Web Hosts
A company based in Glasgow have come up with a novel concept for generating power from the sun using the many waterways in our cities. They have submitted a proposal to the local Council hoping for the green light.
Their interesting idea which is explained below has already won a prestigious award. The judging panel were extremely impressed with the idea and realised its potential for reducing a city’s carbon footprint.
The idea consists of lily pad shaped disks which float on the river surface generating power from the sun. Small motors are integrated into the design in order to rotate the disks for maximum power output at all times.
Whilst, on the face of it, it is a great idea and one which we should probably welcome, I can’t help but wonder what the lack of sunlight below these disks will do to the ecosystem of the river. Presumably these guys have thought of this?
